On August 18, 2017 the Cabinet of Ministers at its meeting approved the Energy Strategy of Ukraine until 2035: Security, Energy Efficiency, Competitiveness (NES), which provides for a twofold reduction in the energy intensity of the national economy and increase in the production of both traditional and renewable energy sources. Prime Minister of Ukraine Volodymyr Groisman called the approval of the energy strategy of Ukraine by 2035 as a historic day. “According to the new strategy, the new structure of energy needs is as follows: nuclear energy will give 50% of the country's electricity by 2035, renewable sources - 25%, hydropower - 13%, and the rest will be covered by thermal power plants” said the premier. Over 300 delegates from 39 countries took part in the World Wind Energy Conference WWEC 2017, which was held from 12 to 14 June 2017 in Malmö, Sweden and hosted by the Swedish Wind Energy Association. On 7 June 2017, REN21 published its Renewables 2017 Global Status Report, the most comprehensive annual overview of the state of renewable energy. Additions in installed renewable power capacity set new records in 2016, with 161 GW installed, increasing total global capacity by almost 9% over 2015, to nearly 2,017 GW. Solar PV accounted for around 47% of the capacity added, followed by wind power at 34% and hydropower at 15.5%. The inherent need for “baseload” is a myth. Integrating large shares of variable renewable generation can be done without fossil fuel and nuclear “baseload” with sufficient flexibility in the power system – through grid interconnections, sector coupling and enabling technologies such as ICT, storage systems electric vehicles and heat pumps.
