THE UWEA MEMBER COMPANIES EMPHASIZE THE URGENCY OF сPPAs

On July 25^th, 2024, Andriy Konechenkov, Chairman of the UWEA Board, spoke at the online event "Corporate PPAs: A Win-Win Partnership for Sustainable Business and Energy Development," organized by the UN Global Compact in Ukraine, EXPRO Electricity, and the UWEA as part of the Ukraine Energy Initiative. 

During the discussion, the following topics were debated:

• The current state of the corporate PPA market in Ukraine;
• Legislative and regulatory aspects of PPA implementation;
• Benefits and challenges of corporate PPAs for producers and consumers;
• The role of corporate PPAs in achieving decarbonization goals and rebuilding Ukraine's energy system;
• The need for PPA market development in Ukraine;

In his speech, the UWEA Chair outlined the dynamic growth of wind energy in Ukraine and shared insights on the modern corporate PPA market in Europe. “The year 2023 has been a record-setting one for corporate PPAs with renewable energy generation in Europe, with 10.4 GW worth of bilateral agreements signed—an increase of 40% compared to 2022. Spain and Germany are leading this market, with heavy industry being the primary consumer in Europe,” Mr. Konechenkov, shared the latest statistics.

"I’s noteworthy that the corporate PPA market in Europe is just gaining momentum, and this includes not only wind generation. In 2023, it also became possible to conclude corporate PPAs combining “green” generation with ESS, as well as for renewable hydrogen. Ukraine should take note of these market trends in Europe. Despite the government’s bold declarations, the national wind energy sector is currently deprived of some market and tax incentives available to other types of generation,” said Andriy Konechenkov.

Other speakers at the event included representatives of some UWEA member companies, namely Oleksandr Podprugin, Regional Manager of Notus Energy and Deputy Chairman of the UWEA Board; Oleksiy Feliv, Managing Partner of INTEGRITES; and Serhiy Kravchuk, Director of Trading and Electricity Supply at the KNESS Group.
