UWEA Participates in the EBRD Draft Energy Sector Strategy Public Discussion

On 6 September 2013 the European Bank of Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) held in Moscow a public discussion of the draft EBRD Energy Sector Strategy. The UWEA delegated Yaroslav Petrov, Asters law firm, to participate in the public discussion on behalf of the organization.

The effective EBRD Energy Sector Strategy was adopted in 2006. The new strategy will be used during 2014-2018. In accordance with the draft EBRD Energy Sector Strategy, the bank will continue supporting renewable energy projects, including in the wind energy sector. Additionally, the EBRD plans to invest into advanced smart-grid infrastructure, new renewable technologies and sustainability of the renewable energy sector.

In the course of the public discussion Yaroslav Petrov updated the participants on several challenges for development of wind energy projects in Ukraine, including problems with connecting to the grid and local content requirement. In this regard he suggested adding to the draft Energy Sector Strategy priorities for financing of upgrading of electricity grids, introduction of smart grids and projects related to localization of wind turbine production in Ukraine.

The EBRD has invited all relevant stakeholders to provide their comments to the draft Energy Sector Strategy by 30 September 2013. The draft EBRD Energy Sector Strategy is available at the following link: http://www.ebrd.com/pages/sector/powerenergy/policy.shtml
