Imagine a future where the energy that powers our lives comes not from burning fossil fuels, but from the clean, endless power of the wind. This was the vision shared with students in Svalyava and Volovets communities during special educational lessons on 13 and 14 May 2024, organized by the Ukrainian Wind Energy Association (UWEA). The project was implemented with the support of Atlas Volovets Energy.
UWEA representatives visited schools in the Zakarpatia region to introduce students to the fascinating world of wind energy. They explained how wind turbines transform wind into electricity, highlighting the positive impact this has on both the environment and the economy.
Students gained a deeper understanding of the differences between renewable and fossil energy sources. They learned how fossil fuels contribute to pollution and climate change, while wind energy offers a sustainable alternative that can help protect our planet for future generations. Through exploring the history of wind power, students discovered how humans have harnessed its energy for centuries – from powering sailboats and mills to generating electricity for entire cities with modern wind turbines.
Addressing common misconceptions about wind energy was also a key part of the lessons. Students learned about the rigorous process of constructing wind farms in Ukraine, the research conducted at each stage, and the environmental considerations involved. The topic sparked lively discussions and questions, demonstrating students' genuine interest in the future of our planet.
To further engage students, the association, in collaboration with Atlas Volovets Energy, donated copies of the children's book “Secrets of the Wind” to school libraries. This captivating story, interwoven with scientific facts, takes readers on a journey through time and space, ultimately fostering a love and respect for nature.
Additionally, a drawing contest was announced, inviting students to express their creativity and perspectives on wind energy through art. The most impressive artworks will be recognized and rewarded.
Andriy Konechenkov, Chairman of the Board of UWEA, emphasized the importance of these educational initiatives:
“It was remarkable to see how attentively the children listened to the information about the historical and modern uses of wind power. They asked many thoughtful and insightful questions.
Events like these wind energy lessons are crucial for building strong relationships with communities. Open communication and accurate information about wind technology are essential for fostering understanding and promoting the development of green energy, which is vital for our country. We need to engage with communities at every stage of a wind energy project.
Educating the younger generation about renewable energy is a significant step towards a greener future for Ukraine. These children will shape the future, and we want to empower them to create a future that is clean, sustainable, and environmentally responsible.”
