MEMORANDUM ON COOPERATION AGAINST ENVIRONMENTAL MANIPULATIONS SIGNED BY HEADS OF 15 UKRAINIAN ASSOCIATIONS

On 12 July 2019, a briefing “Manipulations with Environmental Information: Price for Ukraine” initiated by the Professional Association of Environmentalists of Ukraine was held at the Ukrainian News Information Agency. The briefing brought together the heads of 15 associations of Ukraine active in such sectors of Ukrainian economy as energy, metallurgy and agriculture and water management.

Manipulations with Environmental information aimed at reaching some political or commercial purposes have recently become a dangerous trend in the world, which, unfortunately, has also spread to Ukraine. This urges Ukrainian business to join forces to counteract such phenomena, when certain politicians or business competitors through the created “environmental” organizations call for the closure of certain promising projects and important enterprises, spread unverified and sometimes frankly fake information and manipulate the public.

Many vivid examples of such cases being recorded in Ukraine were given during the briefing. Participants signed the memorandum where outlined the tasks to prevent such manipulations.

“Unfortunately, today, we have a lot of cases when after a RE project has received a positive environmental conclusion issued by the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources, so-called “environmental” organisation initiates court suits demanding to stop the construction of such RE facility. Such situation inhibits the RE development in the country. The environmental terrorism is becoming more widespread and worsens the investment climate in our country. Today we have established an Alliance of professional associations. I hope it will simplify unveiling such “environmentalists” and contacting the relevant authorities to stop their illegal activities”, said Andriy Konechenkov, Chairman of the UWEA Board.
