Press Release: UKRAINIAN WIND MARKET in 2013

The successful development of the Ukrainian wind market continued in 2013.

According to the market survey conducted by the experts of the Ukrainian Wind Energy Association, new 95,3 MW wind capacities were added in the country in 2013. Thus, by December 31, 2013 the cumulative installed capacity of wind energy sector in Ukraine reached 371,2 MW compared to 276 MW in 2012, which corresponds to a growth rate of 56%.

In general, by the end of 2013 the total capacity of the wind turbines erected in the country amounted to 472,9 MW, out of which 101,7 MW to be grid connected in the first quarter of 2014. In addition, the construction of a number of new wind power plants (WPPs) started in Lugansk and Kherson regions and in Crimea.

In 2013 the wind sector of Ukraine generated more than 630 mkn kWh of electricity, about 0,33% of the national electricity production.

“Green” electricity generated by wind power saved 512 000 tons of carbon dioxide emission.

Two companies Managing Company Wind Parks of Ukraine LLC and Wind Power (DTEK) LLC are currently leading the Ukrainian wind industry. The total installed capacity of all wind farms belong to MC Wind Parks of Ukraine has increased to 188 MW. 22 wind turbines FWT Ukraine of 2,5 MW unit capacity produced by Fuhlaender Windtechnology, Ukraine, were commissioned at Vetoenergoprom WPP, Krasnodonskiy WPP, Ostaninskiy WPP and Lutuginskiy WPP.

In 2013 a company Wind Power (DTEK) continued construction of its wind power plant Botievskaya in Zaporozhye region. 35 new wind turbines Vestas V -112 were erected, out of which 9 wind turbines were fully grid connected as of the end of December, 2013.

Two more 3 MW wind turbines Vestas V-112 were commissioned at Novorossiyskaya wind power plant developed by Vindktaft Ukraina.

Additionally the following models of wind turbines were installed and grid connected in the country during 2013: two 2 MW wind turbines by UNISON (Tarkhankutskaya WPP, the Autonomous Republic of Crimea), four wind turbines of 600 kW each by Bonus (Siemens) (Vodenergoremnaladka site, AR Crimea and in Borispol, Kiev region) two wind turbines Тurbowinds T600-48 (Mirnovskaya WPP, AR Crimea and Sivashskaya WPP, Kherson region).

Against the background of ongoing disputes in Ukraine around the issue concerning local content rules, this requirement has been already met by two manufacturers, leading today in the wind energy market of Ukraine, namely - FWT Ukraine and VESTAS.

Production of nacelle frame, one of the most complex and large-sized wind turbine component, was presented in Kramatorks late December. Such structural element of a wind turbine has been manufactured in Ukraine for the first time. The order for production of a nacelle frame for 2,5 MW wind turbine was placed by FWT-Ukraine which has been actively developing its own production of components for the wind industry. In 2013, the company acquired a license from the German company W2E (Wind-to-Energy) for the production of wind turbines of 2, 2,5 and 3 MW.

In mid-December 2013, Ukrainian company Mykolaiv Shipyard “Ocean” in cooperation with the Danish company Vestas, one of the world’s largest manufacturers of wind turbines, implemented a joint pilot project to assembly units for wind generators Vestas V-112 for their further installation at Novorissiyskaya WPP in Kherson region.

“The major deterrent to intensive development of wind power projects in the country is the lack of an overall strategy for the development of renewable electricity sector to regulate issues related to connection of "green" electricity generators to the Ukrainian grid. Lack of ambitious goals for the development of the renewable energy sector of Ukraine inhibits foreign investments in the energy market of Ukraine”, stressed Andriy Konechekov,Chairman of the Ukrainian Wind Energy Association.
