Round table Wind Energy - Path to Energy Independence in Time of War was conducted on June 15, 2015 by the Ukrainian Wind Energy Association in cooperation with the Scientific-Technical Center Psycheа (STC Psychea) in celebration of the Global Wind Day in Ukraine.
In his opening words Sergiy Sapegin, director of STC Psychea, noted that the role of RES had been constantly increasing at national and international levels. For Ukraine with its current military –political instability and total energy dependence on imported energy carriers the renewable energy development is of high importance and of high urgency.
2014 was another record year for the global wind industry stressed Andriy Konechenkov, Head of the UWEA. More than 50 GW was added bringing the global total to 370 GW. “Since there have been no growth in nuclear capacity worldwide (the world nuclear industry remained at 374 GW in 2014) and the wind industry has already reached 400 GW in the first half of 2015, it can be stated that wind has overtaken nuclear in terms of installed capacity, " concluded he. Comparing wind energy vs traditional fossil sources, the Head of the UWEA stressed the advantages the wind technologies offered especially its predictability and stability in prices.
Yaroslav Petrov, Counsel to a law firm Asters, explained the positive changes in the Ukrainian legislation that were introduced by the recently adopted law “On Amendments to Some Laws of Ukraine to Ensure Competitive Conditions for Electricity Generation form the Renewable Energy Sources”. According to him the law will accelerate the wind development in Ukraine.
At the same time Ivan Lysenko, Head of Department of Perspective Development at Wind Power company, underlined a country risk as one of the main barriers to investment in Ukraine. As the expert said, the country risks for Ukraine include constant violations of the existing Ukrainian renewable energy legislation by the National regulator NKREPU as well as military action in the eastern part of the Ukraine and a sharp slowdown in economic growth. “Today nobody invests in the market. However, the new law gives hope that the situation will change for the better. It increases the confidence of foreign investors, so it is possible that the country risk will be reduced, "- noted I. Lysenko.

On June 15 Kiev hosted one more event dedicated to the Global Wind Day - International Scientific and Practical Conference Small Wind Energy organized by the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences and the All-Ukrainian scientific-popular magazine Vynahіdnyk and Ratsіonalіzator (Inventor).
Leading scientists and experts in the field of energy, representatives of government and non-governmental organizations involved in the development, use and implementation of RE technologies discussed the current status of energy sector in Ukraine and the share of renewable energies in the national energy mix. Special attention was paid to small wind energy development, including latest researches and new wind designs by the Ukrainian scientists and the practical utilization of small wind technology in the urban areas. Various models of the Ukrainian wind turbine – Onipko Rotor were presented to the conference participants.
