On June 24, 2015 in the framework of a meeting hold by the Ukrainian Energy Assembly (UEA) two Ukrainian companies Tokmak Solar Energy and Wind Power presented their RE projects implemented in Zaporozhye region. Memebers of the Ukrainian Parliament, journalists and energy experts visited solar plant Tokmak Solar Energy and Botiyevskaya wind power plant.
The wind power plant being composed of 65 wind turbines Vestas V 112 is one of the largest wind farms in the Central and Eastern Europe. Its total installed capacity amounts to 200 MW. The Botiyevskaya WPP located in the coastal area of the Azov Sea is the first plant to form the Priazovskiy Wind Park. The wind park will include two more wind power plants – Primorskaya (200 MW) and Berdyanskay (150 MW) WPPs which are at present in the pipeline.
Botiyevskaya WPP was fully commissioned at the end of 2014. Its annual electricity generation is expected to be an average of about 686 million kWh, which would reduce CO2 emissions by 730 000 tons per year; the reduction is the equivalent of the yearly emissions from 365000 cars. According to experts, it will produce enough electricity to power about 960 000 homes. Within two years the company plans to begin construction of the 200 MW Primorskaya WPP.
«Ukraine greatly depends on imported energy sources such as gas, coal and nuclear fuel. To strengthen the country's energy security, it is important to make a choice: to continue to fund the external energy carriers or to promote the use of its own energy sources. Given that renewable energy is getting cheaper every year driven by the technology cost reduction, it is possible to talk about a significant increase in the "green" electricity contribution to the energy independence of Ukraine”, said Guerman Ainbinder, director of Wind Power.
«Such visits to the operating renewable energy facilities are urgent and important, especially for policy decision-makers. It is a pity that neither representatives of the Ministry of Energy and Coal Industry of Ukraine nor the representatives of the national energy regulator - NCREPU participated in the meeting, though they were invited as well. It would be useful for them primarily to see the green electricity generating facilities, to see how the technology “works”. It’s not possible to reach energy independence and energy security without renewable energies nowadays”, concluded Andriy Konechenkov, chairman of the UWEA, in his presentation on the wind development in Ukraine at the UEA’s meeting.
