In Turkey and globally wind energy usage is increasing as every 30 minutes one wind energy turbine is installed in the world to provide clean and sustainable low cost energy, according to president of Turkish Wind Energy Association Tuesday.
Wind energy president Mustafa Ataseven said during his opening speech at the First Intercontinental Wind Power Congress in Istanbul that nine years ago, Turkey only had 20-30 megawatts, MW, of installed capacity generated from wind energy. He said currently Turkey has over 4000 MW which is an indication of the serious attempts the country has taken during the last decade to increase wind energy's share in the country. Ataseven emphasized that this development helped the country to get a ranking of fifth in Europe and tenth in the world in terms of speed and intensity of wind energy investments. "Our target as a country is to reach 20,000 MW by 2023 which is the year of the country's foundation," Ataseven added.
During his speech, Markus Tacke, president of the European Wind Energy Association, said that Istanbul is pivotal to connecting many countries together and can be considered as an energy centre for renewable energy developments connecting Northern Africa and the Middle East.
He added that wind energy is not only for generating clean energy but also is an source for achieving economic growth. Tacke noted that Turkey has become a leading country in using renewable energy sources efficiently in recent years and will be a model for other countries in the region.
Klaus Rave, president of Global Wind Energy Council, said that 2014 was a peak year for great investments in the wind energy sector.
"Installed capacity reached 1000 MW in 24 countries around the world and approximately 80 countries increased wind energy investments widely," he said and added that significant steps have been taken in the world in order to increase the share of renewables.
Summarizing the results of the First Intercontinental Wind Power Congress Andriy Konechenkov, UWEA’s Chairman, notes that Turkey is a country where a local content bonus scheme has been implemented: “Currently, eleven leading wind manufacturers are operating in the Turkish market. Usage of the Turkish experience in Ukraine will not only increase the capacity of the national wind energy sector, but also attract significant investment in machine-building complex of Ukraine, which, in turn, leads to the creation of new jobs”.
The First Intercontinental wind power congress, IWPC, run from March 31 to April 2. The congress hosted wind energy representatives from 20 different countries in four continents in the WOW Istanbul Convention Centre.
