WWEC2013 IN HAVANA WILL TACKLE WIND POWER UTILIZATION IN TROPICAL CLIMATE AND MORE Hurricane Sandy, before hitting major parts of the USA, previously devastated large areas in the Caribbean, amongst them in Haiti and Cuba, where also dozens of people were killed. Thousands of houses have been destroyed e.g. in the Eastern part of Cuba, mainly around Santiago de Cuba, the country's second largest city. Also the power supply in the area has been seriously affected by the hurricane. The affected area, the province of Holguin, accommodates two wind farms, Gibara I (5,1 MW, six 850 kW turbines installed in 2008) and Gibara II (4,5 MW, six 750 kW machines installed in 2010). Both wind farms were fully hit by hurricane Sandy with wind speeds of up to 180 kilometers/110 miles per hour. The G 20 countries accounted for approximately 80% of the total electricity produced in the world in 2010. As a group these countries are critical in shaping renewable energy trends as they are where most current and future energy demand arises. In 2010 they accounted for more than 82% of the world's solar, wind, geothermal, tidal and wave electricity production. So how do these countries stack up in terms of the share of their electricity that comes from these sources? A new report from the National Resources Defense Council (NRDC) shows us. Within the G20 countries, Germany had the largest amount of renewable electricity in 2011, followed by the EU as a bloc, Italy and Indonesia. The US ranked 7th, India -9th and China -12th. Bit all of these countries are significantly behind Spain, Portugal, Iceland and New Zealand, which each produced more than 15% of their electricity from renewable sources. On September 21, 2012 "Fuhrländer Wind Technolodgy" LLC inaugurated the plant for Fuhrländer FL2500 Wind Turbine production (unit capacity of 2,5 MW) in Kramatorsk, Donetsk region. The manufacture has been established on the basis of JSC "Kramatorsk Heavy Machine Tool Building Works" (KZTS). Valeriy Khoroshkovsky, First Deputy Prime Minister of Ukraine, Anatoly Bliznyuk, Minister of Regional Development and Housing, and Sergei Titenko, Chairman of the National Commission that Implements State Regulation in Energy Sector in Ukraine, attended the event. The German wind energy pioneer Fuhrländer does not belong to the Russian State Nuclear Energy Corporation “Rosatom”. The new majority shareholder is “Windgröße GmbH” owned by the Ukranian Manager Maxim Efimov. Together with other private investors, he has assumed roughly 80% of shares in Fuhrländer. Admittedly, he is also the General Director and minority shareholder of the steel construction group “Energomashspetsstal” in Kramatorsk, but this does not in any way mean that the company “Energomashspetsstal” or its parent company Rosatam, have joined Fuhrländer. Denmark is synonymous with wind energy. Last year the Nordic country met a massive 26% of its electricity demand with wind power, confirming its poll position as a beacon for wind energy as well as for its ability to integrate renewable electricity into the grid. Already a world wind energy leader, Denmark plans to do better: by 2020 it wants energy to occupy a 50% slice of its electricity generation as part of its plans to phase out fossil fuels by 2050. Renewable power generation is expected to continue its rapid growth over the next five years, according to a new report from the International Energy Agency (IEA). The report says that despite economic uncertainties in many countries, global power generation from hydropower, solar, wind and other renewable sources is increase by more than 40% to almost 6 400 terawatt hours (TWh) or roughly one-and-a-half times current electricity current production in the United States. This growth is underpinned by the maturing of a portfolio of renewable technologies, in large part due to supportive policy and market frameworks in Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) countries. However, rapidly increasing electricity demand and energy security needs in recent years have been spurring deployment in many emerging markets both large and small. Japan, which has unfavorable climate and territorial conditions for wind and solar PV power generation, is an OECD member that generates less than 1% of its energy from renewable sources. Despite the catastrophic earthquake in Japan last year, the country's investment in renewable energy has remained stagnant. As such, the Japanese government made a bold announcement on April 27 that will purchase all renewable energy power generation for the next two decades by launching the world's largest renewable energy subsidy program (feed-in-tariff). The government disclosed the details of the program on June 18 implemented the program from July. As such, Japan is expected to see a renewable energy investment boom.
